Letter: Meyers, Day do their jobs

January 10, 2015 Re "Joseph Meyers booted from Rockland Legislature majority," Jan. 5 article:

For many years Rockland was run by "two men in the room": Rockland County Executive Scott Vanderhoef and County Legislator Ilan Schoenberger.

Joe Meyers was a thorn in their side. He was a strong independent voice. He was joined by then-Legislator Ed Day in mutual objection to Rockland County budgets.

Finally the chickens came home to roost. Rockland was identified by New York's comptroller as the most financially stressed county in the state. Our County Legislature finally passed a resolution calling for a budget that would include $10 million for debt reduction. While the County Legislature dithered, the citizens of Rockland decided they had had enough and elected Ed Day as our county executive.

Ed did what the County Legislature ordered. He proposed a budget with $10 million for debt reduction. Predictably, the Legislature then decided it didn't really need to reduce debt so dramatically. And Schoenberger took the opportunity to criticize Day for trying to solve the problem that Schoenberger had created.

Joe Meyers is right. We really do have a useless County Legislature. Unfortunately, Ilan Schoenberger is worse than useless.
